Pompeii is the most visited archaeological site in the world. This Roman city was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AC. Pompeii with its stadium, temples, baths, theaters, brothels, streets, houses, villas and shops was completely covered by ashes and lapilli and forgotten for hundreds of years. Carlo di Borbone, King of the two Sicilies, began excavations in 1748 that are currently still in progress. Between 1924 and 1961 the excavations were supervised by Amedeo Maiuri. Prestigious palaces were discovered as the Villa of the Mysteries, the complete perimeter of the ancient city, the necropolis of Porta Nocera, beautiful frescoes and mosaics. Pompeii is also a UNESCO site considering the impressive ruins of the city that give a vivid picture of society and the daily life of a specific moment in the past that has no equal in the world. Pompeii is easily reachable by train (Circumvesuviana – www.vesuviana.it) from Sorrento. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes and the trains run regularly.
